Butchard R – 1909

BB Gazette Vol.18 No.2 – The Brigade Executive has awarded the Cross for Heroism to Sergeant Robert M’D. Butchard, aged 17, 49th Edinburgh Company, for saving a Boy from drowning at Camp at Strachur, 22ndJuly, 1909.

BB Gazette Vol.18 No.6 – From a report of Edinburgh Battalion Officers and Sergeants Social on 8th January 1910 –… An interesting item in the evening’s proceedings was the presentation of the Royal Humane Society’s ” Diploma for Heroism,” awarded to Sergeant R. M. Butchard, 49th Edinburgh Company, for saving a comrade from drowning at Strachur, Loch Eyne, in July last. A gold medal, suitably inscribed, sent by a brother of the rescued Boy, serving with the colours in South Africa, was also presented to Sergeant Butchard. The Boys’ Brigade ” Cross for Heroism,” previously presented, was also on view.

From The Scotsman 16th November 1909 – Report of Royal Humane Society’s awards – …Testimonial to Robert M Butchard, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, for his plucky rescue of a companion who took cramp while bathing in 16 feet of water in Loch Fyne at Strachur on July 22.
