BB Gazette Vol.44 No.7 – The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Private Thomas Fleming, aged 15, of the 1st Falkirk Company, for saving a child from drowning in the canal at Falkirk on the 6th of September, 1935. Fleming was in his home, the house of the lock-keeper, when he heard cries that a child had fallen into the canal. He rushed out and saw a small Boy of 5 struggling helplessly in deep water. Although he could only swim a little, he at once jumped into the canal and seized the drowning child. Without any assistance he succeeded in overcoming the strong flow around the lock-gate, and ultimately reached shallower water and safety.
