BB Gazette Vol.29 No.8 – The Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Lance-Corporal Edward Gow, 76th Glasgow Company, for saving the life of a Boy from drowning on 29th January. Norman Genefer, a small Boy, seven years old, while playing on the banks of a flooded quarry at Greenlea Park, Anniesland, Glasgow, slipped and fell into the water, which was dirty and stagnant, and at this point nearly thirty feet in depth. Other children called for help, and in answer to their cries, Lance-Corporal Gow, who was in football costume in the adjoining field, turned and ran to the quarry, and without hesitation jumped into the water. Genefer was sinking when Lance-Corporal Gow reached him, and seizing hold of him, brought him to the bank, where both were assisted out of the water.

The Cross was formally presented to Lance-Corporal Gow by Lieut.-General Sir Francis Davies. K.C.B., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., G.O.C.-in-C. Scottish Command, at the Annual Demonstration of the Glasgow Battalion on Saturday evening, 5th March.

Dundee Evening Telegraph, Monday 14 March 1921 – A BOYS’ BRIGADE HERO. Saves Child’s Life Then Resumes Football Game. At the annual demonstration of thy Glasgow Battalion of the Boys’ Brigade the Boys’ Brigade Cross for heroism was presented to Lance-Corporal Edward Gow, Glasgow Company: for his conspicuous gallantry saving the life of Norman Genefer, aged seven years, from drowning at Greenlea Park, Anniesland, on Saturday, January 29. The boy Genefer, while playing on the banks of flooded quarry slipped and fell into the water, which was nearly 30 feet in depth. Lance-Corporal Gow who was in football costume in the adjoining field, ran to the quarry, and without hesitation jumped into the water. Genefer was sinking when Lance-Corporal Gow reached him, and when brought to the bank was unconscious; but after artificial respiration had been applied was taken neighbouring house, and has now completely recovered. After the rescue had been effected Lance-Corporal resumed his game of football, and it was with some difficulty that the witnesses of deed ascertained his name and address.
