Greig J – 1935

BB Gazette Vol.44 No.1 – The Cross for Heroism has also been awarded to Lance-Corporal James Greig, aged 14, 21st Aberdeen Company, for saving the life of a small Boy from drowning in the River Dee on the 5th of July. The scene of the incident is known as a dangerous place where high rocks overlook very deep water, where deeper holes cause eddies and swirling. A child of three had fallen in and was being swept into midstream, when Greig plunged fully clad into the river. The child was 30 feet from the bank, and Greig is not a good swimmer, but he reached the little Boy and seizing him managed to swim to the bank. After one unsuccessful attempt with a boat-hook, Greig and the child were brought safely out.
