McCormack E – 1909

BB Gazette Vol.18 No.2The Brigade Executive have awarded the Cross for Heroism to Lance-Corporal Eugene M’Cormack for saving a Boy from drowning at South Sands, South Shields, 19th July, 1909.

Eugene McCormack, 14 years of age, South Shields, on the 19th July 1909, rescued a boy 13 years of age from drowning at the Trow Rock, South Shields. McCormack and another boy had been bathing, and were dressing some distance from the water’s edge, when they heard an alarm given that a boy was drowning. Running to the place, they observed two boys struggling in the water. One of them managed to reach the shore, but the other sank in deep water at a distance of about 30 yards. McCormack swam out to him, and after a great struggle succeeded in bringing him ashore. The sea was rough at the time, and a strong current was running. McCormack received a certificate from the Royal Humane Society and a medal from the Tyne Trust. The Trustees awarded him a sum of money, to be paid in three annual instalments, for educational purposes.
