Roberts A – 1909

BB Gazette Vol.18 No.2 – The Brigade Executive have awarded the Cross for Heroism to Sergeant Archibald Roberts, aged 17, 1st Pool (Cornwall) Company, for saving an old lady from being run down by a train at Marazion Railway Station, on Saturday, 31st July, 1909.

Cornubian and Redruth Times, 12th August 1909 – Archie Roberts, a lad of seventeen, a sergeant in the 1st Pool Co. of The Boys’ Brigade, gallantly risked his life to rescue an old lady ay Marazion station. Some of the advance guard for the BB camp were at the station inquiring about the tents, when the 11.5 train from Truro came in sight. As an old lady was crossing the line the porters called to her, and some of them started to help her out the way. Stupefied at her danger the old lady stood still, in front of the incoming train, when archie Roberts threw down his bicycle and dashed to the rescue. He jumped between the metals, picked her up in his arms, and dragged her to the side. This he did only just in time, escaping the train himself by but a few yards. There were very few people on the platform, but they heartily commended him for his deed.
