Sandlan J – 1947

BB Gazette Vol.56 No.1 – The Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Private Johnston Gordon Sandlan, aged 13, of 1st Clydebank Company, for saving a Boy from drowning in the Forth and Clyde Canal at Dalmuir on 19th June. The Boy, playing on the bank, had fallen in, and Sandlan, hearing his cries, ran some two hundred yards and plunged in, though he was but a poor swimmer, and had no experience of life-saving. By the time he reached the spot the Boy had sunk. After some tense moments of uncertainty Sandlan secured the Boy and brought him to the verge of the canal where he could only hold on and support the exhausted Boy until both were helped out of the water. Artificial respiration had to be applied to the rescued Boy whose life was undoubtedly saved by Sandlan’s prompt courage and complete disregard for his own safety.
