Awards 1959-1968

This page is under construction – please come back later and hopefully we will be finished.

The 1st September 1959 saw a fundamental change to the award system. The chart below was used to try and show when badges, certificates and felt cloths should be awarded. It was perhaps confusing to some and with alterations after this date and new badges such as Expedition in 1964 it has been difficult to establish what was actually issued between 1959 and 1968 after which the ‘Barrel Badges’ were introduced.

The felt cloths issued with a certificate are indicated by the coloured border.  NEED words about Queens badge and what was need as well as NCO certificate etc

There were separate certificates available for the Signaller’s Award – Morse and Semaphore with different designs. However there was only one First Advanced Certificate and design for the Signallers Award.

Blank certificates also became available whereby the name of the award could be inserted and for Advanced Awards the appropriate stage.

A complete set of certificates has been compiled based on the new chart. Certificates for awards were nothing new prior to 1959 but they only applied to a limited number of awards. From September 1959 onwards each award had at least one certificate apart from the Camper’s which unfortunately never achieved that distinction.

The three ‘pocket’ certificates are shown here (approx. 9 x 12cm when unfolded). Again the design followed the Ambulance (pocket) certificate. The colours also representing the colours of the felt cloth that was awarded at the same time to be worn directly underneath the badge. These type of certificates were issued for the Advanced stages only.
