Peart M – 1957
BB Gazette Vol.66 No.1 – The Boys’ Brigade Cross for Heroism has been awarded to Private Michael Fitzpatrick Peart, age 15, of the 1st Oxford Company. On 16th May last a mother was cycling along the towpath near Folly Bridge at Oxford with her baby on the back, when she lost control of the cycle, and all fell into the river. At this spot the river is 60 yards wide and 7 feet deep and very busy with steamer and motor-boat traffic. Without a moment’s hesitation Peart dived in and made straight for the baby whom he brought to the bank. He then went back for the mother who had reached the side but had not been able to get out owing to the steep bank. He supported her until others were able to drag her out.
